RULES and guidelines
Eligibility:
- Students in grades 3-5 may participate in the competition. Team selection and configuration are according to the guidelines/requirements specified by each campus librarian.
- Three to six students may make up a team.
- The competition is open to an audience by parents of the participants and appropriate school personnel.
- The official reading list comes from the annual Bluebonnet Nominated books as selected by a committee of Texas librarians.
- A new list of twenty books is released each year at the Texas Book Festival in October. In selecting titles, the committee considers student interests, relevant content, reputable reviews, and literary quality. Both fiction and nonfiction books are represented. The author must be a living U.S. citizen or an author who resides and publishes in the United States. Books considered for the master list must have been published in the United States. Only titles published within the three years prior to the master list release date are considered. Bluebonnets are the only children’s literature awards where the winner is picked by children.
- The contest will consist of 2 rounds of 25 quotes each. If a there is a tie for 1st or 2nd place after the two rounds, then a Sudden Death round will be played until winners are determined.
- Each quotation will be addressed to all teams at the same time. The quotes will appear on the team's iPad and on the big screen as well.
- The quotation will be read by an announcer and then repeated one additional time.
- The team will discuss the answer but will only have 15-30 seconds from the time the quote is initially read to the time they need to have their answer on their white board.
- At the end of Round 1 there will be a small break for the judges to tally up the scores and compare.
- At the end of Round 2 there will be a small break for the judges to tally up the scores. If there is a clear 1st and 2nd place winner, awards will be given. If there is a tie for 1st and/or 2nd, the Sudden Death round will begin until the ties are resolved.
Awards: - Individual trophies will be awarded to the 1st-3rd place team participants.
- Medals will be awarded to all other participants (given to the librarian if time does not permit giving individually).
- A “traveling” trophy will be awarded to the winning school’s librarian and principal.
